People are applauding incoming Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. While I don’t know his politics, or really, who he is, I am applauding too. Why? Because it is 2015.
Frankly, I don’t know much about Canada or how their political system works. I was probably dreaming, but I could have sworn I heard an NPR story that their past election season was the longest modern campaign season and lasted 11 weeks… ONLY ELEVEN WEEKS! But that is another story for another day.
PM Trudeau should be applauded because he has made good on his commitment that his cabinet would be gender-equal, and as such, has joined an elite group of people working to end the neglect of women.
He has broken from the tradition of a having a males only club to one that looks much better in photographs.
Looks good, huh? This is important because our government needs to adjust to a gender-strong representation.
The U.S. is ranked 54th in the Gender Gap Index. Things are changing, slowly. Too slowly.
Especially when it comes to the number of women of color in Congress.
We need a gender-equal, racially-equal strong government.
